How to Upload Your Music to Spotify in 2026 (Without Wasting Money or Time)

How to Upload Your Music to Spotify in 2026 (Without Wasting Money or Time)

Did you know most artists upload their music to Spotify the wrong way and, because of it, lose money, visibility and even the chance to land on editorial playlists? Don't worry — that won't happen to you. With us you'll learn how to upload your music to Spotify step by step, using the same tricks we use at our agency to make artists' releases go perfectly.

What you need before uploading your music to Spotify

Before you go into the distributor, get the following ready:

  1. Your song in WAV format (44.1 kHz and 16–24 bit). No low-quality MP3s.
  2. Official cover art → at least 3000x3000 px, with no logos or borders.
  3. Required codes:
    • ISRC → identifies each song. (In Spain you can request it from AGEDI, but most distributors assign one automatically.)
    • UPC → identifies the full release (album or single).

Tip: set your release date 3–4 weeks in advance. That way you can prepare your campaign, pitch to editorial playlists on Spotify for Artists and build hype on social media.

Step by step to upload your music to Spotify

In this example we use an official distributor (RouteNote), but the process is similar across all of them:

  1. Create your distributor account
    • Sign up with your name, email and password.
    • Verify your email and log in to the dashboard.
  2. Create a new release
    • Fill in the single/album title.
    • Add your artist name or create a new profile if it doesn't exist yet.
    • Include the credits (songwriters, producers).
    • State whether your song has lyrics or is instrumental.
    • Select the genre and release date.
  3. Upload the audio file
    • Some distributors only accept WAV and others take 320 kbps MP3. Check before exporting your song.
    • Upload your track and save it.
  4. Add the cover art
    • Upload a JPG file.
    • Make sure it looks sharp and meets the requirements.
  5. Select platforms and territories
    • Tick every platform (Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, YouTube Music…).
    • Select "all territories".
  6. Distribution
    • You can choose free distribution (giving up a % of royalties) or paid (you keep 100%).
    • Accept the terms and you're done! Your song will be scheduled to go live on the chosen date.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Uploading late → if you don't leave enough time, you won't be able to pitch to editorial playlists and you'll lose your chances of being added.
  2. Bad metadata → if you don't tag your song properly (genre, instruments, etc.), Spotify won't know which audience to show it to.
  3. No marketing strategy → uploading it isn't enough; you need hype and promotion beforehand.
  4. Wrong cover art → no logos, blurry images or badly formatted files.
  5. Wrongly assigned codes → if you don't know how, leave them blank and the distributor will generate them for you.

Conclusion

Uploading your music to Spotify isn't complicated, but doing it badly can cost you visibility and opportunities. If you follow this step-by-step, you'll avoid mistakes and have a better chance of landing on playlists, reaching new listeners and growing as an artist.
