How Much to Invest in Your Music (and What NOT to Spend On)

How Much to Invest in Your Music (and What NOT to Spend On)

If you're starting out in music (or you've been at it a while) and you're wondering how much to invest in your music, I'll be crystal clear from the start:

👉 the problem isn't how much money you have, it's how you spend it.

Every week I talk to artists who tell me: "I only have €50, €100, €500… what do I put it into?" And most of them make the same mistake: investing without a strategy.

In this article I'll explain, straight and to the point:

  • What a real budget to promote your music looks like.
  • What to do if you have €0, €100, €500 or €1,000.
  • What you should NOT spend a single euro on.
  • How to avoid throwing your money away, even with a small budget.

This isn't theory. It's real practice.

The uncomfortable truth about investing in your music

Before we get into numbers, you need to understand something key:

Investing in music isn't spending for the sake of it. Investing means putting money where there's a return: data, learning, audience or validation.

An expensive music video, a paid playlist or an unvalidated campaign aren't investments. They're emotional spending.

How much to invest based on your real budget

Not every artist is at the same stage. That's why your music promotion budget should fit your situation, not what you see on Instagram.

Artist with €0 — your weapon is content

If you have no money, that's absolutely fine. Your investment is: time, consistency and content.

What to do: create 30 videos in 30 days, with a recommended split of 10 singing videos (playbacks, acoustic, a cappella), 10 personal videos (real stories, values, process) and 10 emotional videos (moments that connect with people).

Here you don't need money. You need discipline. 👉 Many artists have grown from zero with nothing but well-thought-out content.

Artist with €100 — what TO invest in (and what NOT)

With €100, the question isn't "how do I go viral?", but: "how do I not ruin my project from the start?"

Smart split: 85% → production, mix and master; 15% → professional cover art (even if it's simple).

Why: if your song sounds bad, nobody sticks around. If your image is amateur, they won't take you seriously.

Do NOT invest yet in: ads, music videos, paid playlists (banned) or bots (they destroy your algorithm). With this budget, the goal is to sound good, not to "blow up".

Artist with €500 — the smart split almost nobody does

This is where the real strategic game begins.

  • €200–250 → production, mix and master (high level)
  • €50–80 → cover art that defines your identity
  • €150 → launch strategy + content filming
  • €50–100 → ads ONLY if you have validated content
If a video doesn't work organically, you do NOT spend that €50.

Running ads on content that doesn't connect is burning money. Prioritise vertical content, narrative and organic validation — not pointless expensive music videos.

Artist with €1,000 — a professional launch without wasting it

With €1,000 you can do things properly… if you're smart about it.

  • €300–350 → production, mix and master
  • €50–80 → professional cover art
  • €150–200 → marketing strategy and content
  • €250–300 → music video (only if it adds to the story)
  • €50–100 → ads on pieces that ALREADY work

Here a music video only makes sense if there's an audience and a narrative. If nobody's watching you, it's an expensive whim.

What NOT to spend a cent on (even if you have money)

This will save you months — or years — of frustration.

❌ Fake playlists and bots: they sink your algorithm, Spotify penalises accounts, and they don't generate real fans.

❌ Super-expensive music videos with no audience: a €5,000 video with 2,000 views isn't an investment. It's decoration.

❌ Advertising without validated content: running ads on something that doesn't work organically is like pushing a car with no fuel.

❌ Managers, labels or bookers too soon: if you have no traction, 90% of the promises are smoke.

❌ Abusive distributors: watch out for percentages and long contracts. Always read the fine print.

The perfect plan if you were starting from scratch today

  1. A simple but well-produced song (€200–300)
  2. A clean, coherent cover
  3. A clear launch strategy
  4. Film 30 videos in a single day
  5. Post for 30 days without fail
  6. Spot which content connects
  7. Put €20–50 into ads ONLY on the winner
  8. Repeat the process

That's how you build real growth.

Conclusion: your problem isn't the money

You don't need a bigger budget. You need a strategy that makes every euro work for you.

Your music promotion budget isn't a magic number. It's a conscious decision. And remember: 👉 Your talent isn't the problem. Your strategy is.
